Product Development Specialist

Our client has Retained The Carlisle Group to conduct a Search for a Product Development Specialist (Commercial Lines).


Provide product design, development, and maintenance support, assisting in maintaining uniformity and consistency in product design across programs, and in maintaining and communicating
applicable/required forms, endorsements, rates, rules within the company to ensure compliance with carrier filings and state regulations.

Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required. JD an advantage.
Advanced insurance training completed, CPCU preferred.

Work Experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years work experience in a property and casualty insurance company, insurance brokerage firm, insurance agency, or consulting state filings department.
Special Skills & Knowledge
  • Must have advanced knowledge of, and experience with, commercial property and casualty insurance products and a good working knowledge of ISO products, forms, endorsements, manuals, and rule for all property and casualty commercial lines of business.
  • Must have extensive commercial lines forms drafting experience, including coverage forms, endorsements, policy declarations, rules, and underwriting guidelines.
  • Experience with preparation of initial state filings and responses to insurance department filing inquiries.
  • Extensive knowledge of insurance department rules and regulations governing coverage forms, endorsements, rates, rules, and policy declarations.
  • Extensive experience using Word and Excel software.
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality and professional demeanor and approach in the performance of duties.
  • Must possess initiative to work independently without frequent supervisory involvement.
  • Must be equipped with good communication skills to effectively coordinate and communicate with various levels of associates and insurance company partners.
  • Ability to quickly understand new insurance products and product changes.
  • Detail oriented, must possess ability to pay close attention to detail and proofread documents.
  • Possess high organizational skills and have the ability to set and adjust priorities.
  • Ability to function as a team player and work closely with Corporate Product Development Manager, Program Managers, Program Operations Services, Actuarial, I/T Teams, Regulatory contacts and state filings.
  • Ability to make decisions within scope of authority.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

New Product Development:
  • Assist Program Managers in drafting and designing new or revised forms, endorsements, policy declarations, policyholder notices, and underwriting guidelines. Reviews IT product support material such as proposals, summaries of coverage, and applications to assure products align with coverages.
  • Maintain as much uniformity and consistency in our products across programs as possible.
  • Prepare responses to inquiries to respond to insurance department inquiries/objections within required time frame.
  • Provide due diligence support during review of potential new programs. Provide competitor comparisons for use in the development of new programs and improvement in current programs.

Product Development Regulatory Compliance:
  • Review ISO circulars and other regulatory material for impact on company programs. Develop and revise state amendatory endorsements and policyholder notices to support compliance with state regulations. Provide information for explanatory memorandums and rules.
  • Assist Program Managers in evaluating impacts of statutory and industry changes on each program.
  • Stay abreast of state insurance department rules and regulations including their changes, address issues involving insurance department compliance and provide suggested changes in product or procedures as needed.
  • Oversee UM/UIM statutory changes, and provides advice to Product Development and Compliance Analyst.
